What can you see in Bodrum on foot?

The ancient theatre, the Myndos Gate, the Mausoleum site, the Zeki Müren Arts Museum and Bodrum Castle all sit within the same town centre and can be walked. The bays of the peninsula need a car.

Is the ancient theatre far from the centre of Bodrum?

No, it sits on the slope directly above the centre. The issue is not distance but gradient: the walk is uphill the whole way.

Is one day enough for Bodrum?

For the town centre, yes. Combining the centre and the peninsula in a single day rarely works, because the distances between the bays are half hours rather than minutes.

Make this split first

Bodrum is not one place. On one side there is the town centre, built over ancient Halicarnassus, everything in it within walking distance. On the other side are the bays of the peninsula, and between them lie half hours, not minutes.

Most lists throw both into one enumeration. Try to combine them in a day and you spend the day in the car.

In the centre, on foot

The ancient theatre is at the top of the slope. From there it is downhill, and the rest of the town arrives in order. These four fit into one walk.

It is uphill. The theatre is not far, but it is on the slope. Short distance, real gradient. In the midday heat this walk is harder than it looks. We wrote it up on how to get there.

On the peninsula, by car

Outside the centre the distances become real. Do not squeeze these into the same day as the town walk.

Gümüşlük. The western tip. The remains of ancient Myndos lie underwater, and the walkable stone path runs into the sea.
Yalıkavak. Northwest. Marina and windsurfing.
Bitez and Ortakent. South coast, mandarin groves and shallow bays.
Türkbükü and Gündoğan. North coast, bays with jetties.
The ancient city of Pedasa. Above Konacık, a Lelegian settlement. It takes a walk and it is not a laid out archaeological site.

No kilometres and no minutes in this section. Road conditions shift with the season and we have not measured them on the ground. What we have not measured, we do not print.

What to plan the theatre around

Early morning or late afternoon. At midday there is no shade and the stone heats up. Watch the opening hours: the box office closes half an hour before the site.

Entry to the archaeological site is free. Concert tickets are a separate thing and have nothing to do with it.

Why this page exists

Google has been putting this site at position one to two for "things to do in Bodrum" for weeks. In four weeks it was clicked once, since the title was in Turkish. Anyone searching in English and seeing Turkish moves on, and fairly so.

What follows is not a complete or neutral Bodrum guide and we do not claim it is. It is a list seen from the theatre. That is why the centre is detailed and the peninsula only headlined.
